How it All Started

A few years ago I was searching for budget friendly, fun family activity. Going out was always fun, but quickly added up in our pocketbooks. We needed something we could do at home together that wouldn't break the bank.
Enter Ohana Movie Nights! We would watch a dvd and theme our dinner to it, too. Disney films always worked - they were family friendly and plenty of them. But where to start? So many to choose from!
Enter my obsessive compulsiveness with doing things in order! We would start from the beginning of course, the letter A!
And the rest is history...

Did you know that there are many, many Air Buds???

I love dogs, and so does my family. Don't get me wrong. But when I continued my trek of Disney "A" movies with "Air Bud", little did I know what monster I was creating... there seem to be a total of five Air Buds! Rather than detail each movie party (because I was crazy enough to do most of them), I will lump them together into one here.

I'm sad to say that we did not have an original "Air Bud" party... we simply rented the movie, and loved it! It's a great family film, almost like a classic boy-dog story line. I highly recommend it. After falling in love with the first one, that's when the Air Bud party train started...

So let's start off with the tickets!
In the first one he plays basketball, but suddenly we discover that Air Bud is darn good at football, too!
Soccer, anyone? Oh yeah, and he has some babies!

The raccoon, as cute as he is, is a real bad guy in this one - watch out!

So as you can see this is quite an overwhelming task to take on... I needed something like... a schedule... voila!

Sports foods are relatively easy - they are pretty much All American junk food, but that's ok every now and then.

This was our soccer inspired menu, featuring... Balls! Every kind of food ball we could come up with! Meatballs, garlic rolls, rice balls... (not sure why there's an Elsa & Anna picture in there.)

Here is our attempt at football food: wings, potato salad, salsa & chips, and a football brownie!

As you can see there is plenty of Air Buds to go around... and did I mention his pups become so popular they start having a series of their own??? Don't get me started...

20,000 whaaaat...?

Just when I thought I had finished with the numbers, I come across an old Disney film - their remake of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"! Yikes, I didn't feel like skipping that one because everyone seemed to enjoy a live action movie every now and then...
Here is my sea themed title card.

And of course if you're going to have a movie night you need a ticket! Don't ask me why there's a whale on it, there just weren't that many cute giant squids out there!

So once again the menu is pretty much a no-brainer when it comes to sea themes, you just have to keep with the ocean items and you're pretty much set! Living in Hawaii has its perks... like poke bowls! Although I would never try to make it myself....

The giant squid rolls are actually just Pillsbury crescent rolls but instead of making those nice little triangular shape, I molded it into legs for a giant squid, with the head in the form of a dough ball! Darn me for not taking a picture of it...

Sea foam punch is quite tasty and refreshing, not as complex and delicious as my sister's recipe, but just some 7UP with some sherbet (any flavor is fine.) This time I managed to remember to take a picture...

On with the A's!

As we continued on with our Disney ohana movie nights, I was pleased to find out that Alice in Wonderland was next. It's easy to do a party in this theme, especially since high tea is making a come back... we would have our own little tea party!

One of my favorite tea sandwiches is cucumber, and I happened to find a good recipe for one that was Downtown Abbey inspired. They came out delicious, and even Becca like them! But my mom was shocked to find out that I had not deseeded the cucumbers beforehand...
We had an assortment of dessert, and those little Chessmen cookies go really well with the red and black card characters in the movie. The seasoned fries got replaced last minute by a few hor d'oeuvres.  But now that I look back at my photograph, for the life of me I can't remember what those black things are on the crackers! Blackberries???...

We chose a nice decaf tea so Becca could enjoy it, too. She also had fun being the tea hostess, and was proud to be the one pouring the kettle. If you notice, we used our Japanese tea kettle set. Talk about a diverse menu!

Hitting the Rewind Button!

After our first successful Ohana movie night, I quickly realized that I had forgotten about numbers! And sure enough, there was a Disney movie that started with 1. Well actually, a 101 to be exact! Once I had discovered my "error" there was no going back.

101 Dalmatians was another one of those Disney classics that you've seen as a kid but probably don't remember a thing from. I was ready to go down nostalgia lane, only to discover that there was a live action version made a few years back. I didn't want to see it, but I was overruled 2 to 1. What's a wife to do...
When I started research on the menu, I was surprised to find that there were a lot of puppy/dog party themes out there, so finding inspiration wasn't difficult at all. I even copied one ladies recipe for puppy bones (hot dogs wrapped with Pillsbury dough.) Our "spotted" tomato salad was more like peppered tomatoes (same diff!) And chocolate chip cookies.. well, they pretty much come spotted. Simple menu!

Letter A, Here We Go....

The date was September 2014 - I was ready to throw my first Ohana movie night! Luckily, there were plenty of Aladdin themed dinner ideas floating around the web. I quickly realized that if we were going to do a proper movie night we'd need a ticket.

Next came the announcement and menu page.
I tried to keep the food simple with a little spin on healthy. It was fun to try something different, and hopefully expand my family's tastes.
